A Journey of Strength and Self
Philip’s Story
Written by Philip Diaz in November 2010 following his final chemotherapy session. The words that follow have been preserved exactly as he wrote them, offering a deeply personal reflection on resilience, determination, and the journey he faced with remarkable courage.
My Story
See, you can guess and speculate,
… But it’s always left for me to articulate.
My story, my journey – one of a kind,
Not just an illusion of a very creative mind.
So here’s the story, let me summarise.
This is not the beginning of the end, this is not the start of my demise.
I will go on forever, unstoppable, never a quitter,
I don’t go complaining, saying “FML” all over Facebook and Twitter.
Don’t know where to start, but I know where I’ll end.
And that progress shall be seen once I’m on the mend.
No ifs, no buts. No failing, no losing.
Only glory from this point forward is what I am choosing.
Religion failed me, medicine as well,
These are my hiking boots, to travel through hell.
One step at a time, nails through my shin.
Excruciating pain that one must take on the chin.
Enough of this dark side, I’m not Darth Vader.
Damn it I’m positive, on the other end of that radar.
From this moment on one hundred percent dedication,
To succeed time after time is now my only vocation.
To be the best, a passion, a desire,
Light one side, but you’ll never reach the end of my wire.
Born and raised with pride and a sense of defiance,
No one to trust, counting on my own self-reliance.
Writing this now, sleep deprived at 2am,
Trying to sleep but can’t with this God damn phlegm.
Just shows the state I’m in, not in my prime,
But still with it enough to write this rhyme.
As you can see, I haven’t even gone into depth yet.
Want you to relax, buckle up your seatbelts and get set.
This is a crazy ride in the theme park of my life,
This passage, is one where I have become a man.
I don’t want followers, supporters, or even the odd fan.
I’m here to serve as inspiration, when you have something,
A dream, an aspiration.
Don’t close your eyes and follow the rest of the nation
Don’t take pride in becoming part of global devastation.
Take your dreams and run, because with those dreams my friend,
You can become number one.

In Memory of Philip
Philip’s words continue to inspire others facing adversity, reminding us that courage is not the absence of fear or pain — it is the decision to keep moving forward despite them.
